Scotland’s one-club men, No 4: John Greig (Rangers)

EDINBURGH-BORN Greig spent his entire playing career at Ibrox between 1961 and 1978.

Voted the Greatest Ever Ranger by the club’s fans, Greig’s crowning achievement came in 1972 when he captained the club to European Cup Winners’ Cup success in Barcelona. The height of his career coincided with Jock Stein’s all-conquering Celtic nine-in-a-row and European Cup-winning side, but he still amassed a plethora of honours. As well as that Cup-Winners’ Cup he won league titles in 1963, 1964, 1975 1976 and 1978, the Scottish Cup in 1963, 1964, 1966, 1973, 1976 and 1978, League Cups in 1964, 1965, 1976 and 1978 and was Player of the Year in 1966 and 1976.

When he hung up his boots in 1978 he went on to manage the team until 1983. He had roles within the club and was a director until the ill-fated takeover by Craig Whyte.
