Riled Reid tells Shiels to expect some strong words

ANGRY Ayr United manager Brian Reid has warned Kenny Shiels to expect stern words should he ever cross paths with his Kilmarnock counterpart again. Reid is still fuming after the Northern Irishman claimed Ayr played for penalties in Saturday’s League Cup semi-final extra-time defeat to the SPL side.

Relations between the two benches were already strained before a ball had even been kicked after Shiels suggested the part-time First Division side were effectively full-time.

Reid, who yesterday snapped up former St Johnstone and Blackpool striker Keigan Parker on a deal until the end of the season, accused the Rugby Park manager of being disrespectful in the aftermath of the clash.

But such is the former Rangers defender’s fury over Shiels’ conduct days after the match that he yesterday fired a fierce salvo at the Kilmarnock manager. Reid said: “He should have just kept his mouth shut. The thing is, I didn’t have a problem with Kenny before this all kicked off. I was going to phone him about what he said, but I decided against wasting my breath on it.

“Next time I see him face to face I will tell him and he should be prepared if we run into each other because I will have some stern words for him.

“Contrary to what has been said, we didn’t play for penalties against Kilmarnock in the semi-final. [That] is absolutely nonsense and for him or anyone else to say that is garbage.

“I had heard that what he said before the game about the part-time thing was in a bid to try and wind me up, but he’ll never make a comedian to be fair.”
