Dumbarton 2-2 Cowdenbeath: Moore rescues point

A THRILLING clash ended all square as both sides had to settle for a point in their battle to beat the drop. Cowdenbeath deservedly led through Jamie Stevenson’s opener and should have been out of sight by half-time.

However, Dumbarton produced a spirited response and threatened to pinch the points until Craig Moore’s last-gasp strike.

Ian Murray, the home manager, best summed up the mood when he said: “I’m disappointed and happy at the same time. It’s obviously disappointing to lose such a late goal but we can take it as a positive as well because we have one more point than we had at the start.”

Cowdenbeath took an early lead when Greg Stewart unselfishly squared for Jamie Stevenson to sweep the ball home from ten yards.

Stewart almost doubled the lead when he turned Stuart Urquhart inside out before seeing his effort blocked by Stephen Grindlay’s legs. The loose ball fell for Moore, whose angled shot crashed off the base of an upright.

Then a sweeping four-man move had Dumbarton defending desperately again before Scott Agnew came to the rescue with a last-ditch clearance.

Cowdenbeath suffered a setback when keeper Thomas Flynn limped off and replacement Craig Wight was picking the ball out of the net within two minutes. He did superbly to block Jim Lister’s effort but Bryan Prunty buried the rebound.

Dumbarton thought they had won it when Agnew raced onto Paul McGinn’s diagonal pass and drilled a low shot into the far corner. However, Moore had the final say in the dying seconds when he bundled the ball home from close range.

Blue Brazil player-boss Colin Cameron said: “I thought we should have finished it off before they equalised. But this might turn out to be a very important point.”
