Cowdenbeath 4 - 4 Raith Rovers: Spoils shared in eight-goal thriller
In a week which saw Germany’s 4-4 draw with Sweden in Berlin stun the football world, that remarkable scoreline was mirrored in rather more modest surroundings, writes Alan Temple at Central Park.
Hosting Fife rivals Raith Rovers, the home side threw away two-goal leads on two occasions, having raced ahead thanks to early strikes from Kyle Miller and a fine Jamie Stevenson free-kick.
The first comeback from the Kirkcaldy men was laudable. Brian Graham lashed home his 13th goal of the season with a free-kick from inside the box after referee Bobby Madden adjudged Cowden keeper Thomas Flynn to have picked up a back-pass from Thomas O’Brien.
Greig Spence then restored parity, powerfully heading in a Joe Hamill corner.
Lewis Coult climbed from the bench and earned himself the man-of-the-match Champagne – although he would have preferred three points.
In the space of 70 seconds he netted twice to send Cowdenbeath into the final ten minutes with a 4-2 lead. However Pat Clarke halved arrears on 81 minutes.
And Simon Mensing was on hand with the final attack of the match to play the role of Rasmus Elm, Sweden’s hero in the week, to head home from close range.
