BRAZIL captain Neymar has been handed a four-match ban, ruling him out of the remainder of the Copa America and stripping the tournament of one of its biggest stars.
The Barcelona attacker, who was also fined $10,000, has been punished for his role in Wednesday’s post-game fracas, when he was shown a straight red card for confronting Jeison Murillo and Carlos Bacca after the Group C defeat to Colombia.
Brazil will appeal the ruling.
Neymar picked up a red card after apparently kicking the ball toward Colombia’s Pablo Armero after the referee had blown the final whistle. He also appeared to head-butt another player who came to confront him, and Brazilian media said he confronted the referee before going into the changing rooms.
Bacca, who shoved Neymar from behind and also was sent off, has been banned for two matches and fined $5,000.
Brazil could still be eliminated depending on their result against Venezuela tonight. All four teams in Group C have three points each heading into the final round. Colombia play Peru.
Hosts Chile eased into the last eight with a 5-0 win over Bolivia in Group A. The goals came from Charles Aranguiz (2), Alexis Sanchez, Gary Medel and an own goal.
