Despite treasuring his goal against Caley David Wotherspoon aims to score any way he can for Hibs

However, that’s exactly what he did against Inverness on Saturday and the versatile Hibs player revealed that he’d love a few more goals to add to his collection over the coming months.

Manager Pat Fenlon has a few options in attack right now but Wotherspoon is determined to weigh in by scoring a few of his own from the middle of the park. The 22-year-old treasures the strike against Caley as one of the finest he has scored in his career, the player allowing the ball to drop outside the penalty box before unleashing a dipping and spinning shot into the net behind Ryan Esson.

It was Wotherspoon’s first goal since netting in the Scottish Cup against Cowdenbeath back in January, but he’s hoping not to leave it quite so long next time around.

He said: “I’m usually pretty happy just to get on the scoresheet at all, never mind score a goal like the one that I hit against Inverness at the weekend.

“As soon as I hit it, I knew that it was a good one and I thought that it was going in. It just sat up perfectly for me and when I chested it down the only thing on my mind was to have a shot.

“I was really pleased with it, not just because of the way that I hit it but also because I maybe haven’t scored as many goals as I would have liked lately.

“I really want to add to more goals to my game.

“Every time I score one I always talk about scoring more but then it never seems to happen. Hopefully this time I actually can do that and help the team out a bit. We’ve only played seven games this season so I am hoping that I have got plenty of time to add a few more this season.

“I think that every player would probably say that they want to score more goals over the course of the season, but we have got a lot of attacking options to choose from.

“Leigh Griffiths has been great for us this season and has really been showing everyone what he is capable of. If he is scoring goals and the rest of the boys can add a few of their own then I think that it can only be good for the team.”

Aside from that beauty against Caley, Wotherspoon can also add a couple of assists to the mix this season and he reckons that teeing them up for others around him is what his job should be, rather than looking to have a go himself.

He continued: “Obviously when you score it’s a confidence boost and, as a midfielder, you look to get on the scoresheet if you can, maybe help out from set pieces and things like that.

“But your main objective is to make sure that you’re supplying the strikers in your team.

“I was delighted with the goal on Saturday but I have set a few up as well and that is pleasing for me as well.”

Hibs have been a different proposition this season and Wotherspoon believes there is real quality running through the current squad. He admits that many would have written his side off at the beginning of the campaign because of how close they came to relegation last time around. But he is delighted to have, so far, been able to silence the doubters. This season has started really well and hopefully will continue for us.

“The first game of the season when we lost to Dundee United wasn’t so good and I think that a lot of people feared for us, judging by the reaction to that match. But we have recovered well from that and I think the boys who have been brought in are really hard-working, although there is a lot of experience in there as well.

“Ben Williams has been terrific for us so far. James McPake has been a rock for us and centrally the manager got Gary Deegan in.

“I think he has proven to be  a bit of a good find, to be  honest, and he’s been very popular with the supporters because he has added something to the side.

“He’s got a lot of fight about him and he’s good to play alongside because he has got plenty of instructions and bits of advice to give you. He’s a great example and good for everyone around him.”

Not only did Wotherspoon pay tribute to his team-mates, he also praised the club’s supporters for the way they  have stuck with their team through thick and thin in recent months.

“The fans have been terrific, they have been behind us every week and on the road, they give us a lot of encouragement.

“There was a sense of disappointment at the end of the game. We were pretty gutted when the final whistle went, not to have come away with three points – we had a few chances to bury the game.

“But while the result itself was disappointing I think the boys have shown their fighting spirit throughout the season.

“Hopefully it can continue.”

This weekend Hibs will face another big test when they travel north to face Aberdeen on league business.

Their match at Pittodrie is the lunchtime kick-off and Wotherspoon is keen to have the points wrapped up well before any of the other teams in the SPL have even kicked off.

“Away games are always difficult and especially when you are going to Pittodrie.

“It’s an early kick off, hopefully the weather is not as bad it has been recently because it can be difficult to play in such strong winds and rain. We watched them at the weekend and they fought very well but hopefully we can go up there and get the result that we are looking for.”
