Theatre: Waiting for Godot

Veteran Scottish actors Brian Cox and Bill Paterson star in this new production of Samuel Beckett’s celebrated play. Commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Royal Lyceum Theatre, the play will run until October 10. Cox was one of the original performers in the first production staged by the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company, which has been based in Grindlay Street since 1965.

Cinema: Closed Curtain

Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Jafar Panahi has battled oppression from the government of his home country of Iran throughout much of his career. He was banned from filmmaking in 2011 but still managed to complete a documentary, This Is Not a Film, which was smuggled from the country to France in a flash drive hidden in a birthday cake. Closed Curtain, which won Best Script at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival, is a semi-autobiographical story of a reclusive writer who helps to hide two siblings on the run from the police.

Television: In Case You Missed It

Irish comedian Dara O’Briain hosts this new BBC show which offers a unique review of some of the country’s favourite telly programmes, including Strictly Come Dancing and The Jeremy Kyle Show. Expect the surreal and unexpected as shows are edited to present the subject in an altogether different light.

Art: VAU Members Show

Up-and-coming artists from Dundee’s VAU (Visual Artist Unit) display their latest works at the Generator Projects exhibition space. The free show includes paintings, sculpture and installations. The artists will be on hand to discuss their works and influences.

Lecture: The Science of Breaking Bad

If you’ve ever wondered about some of the many scientific processes highlighted in the smash hit show Breaking Bad, look no further than this event. Dr Jonathan Hare of Sussex University will explore the use and abuse of meth amphetamine, acid bath disposal of bodies, exploding crystals, poisonous gases and much more from the series.
