Scottish Cup: Buckie and Nairn through

  • by CRAIG P STEWART

It was a great day for the Highland League in Saturday’s William Hill Scottish Cup Second Round replays as Buckie
Thistle and Nairn County saw off Annan and Clyde with East of Scotland’s Vale of Leithen also having a great day as they progressed to the next stage.

Buckie made the 550 mile round trip to Galabank worthwhile, recording their first success against a SFL side since defeating Montrose in 1956. Thistle’s success was all the more credible as they played the last half an hour with 10 men following Shaun Carroll’s red card.

Scott Chaplain put Annan ahead 3 minutes after half-time, before Zander Sutherland levelled on 59 minutes.

Carroll was then dismissed for a crude challenge on Graeme Ramage but the 10 men secured their win, and a game againsst Turriff in Round Three, when Sutherland scored again, 13 minutes from time

Thistle boss Gary Hake said, “I told the players that they could be legends and they went out and became them.”

Nairn knocked out the Bully Wee 3-2 after going two down. Connor Gethins and John Cameron equalised before Andrew Neill scored a last minute winner.

County now head to Forfar with Vale of Leithen heading for Cowdenbeath following their 5-1 thrashing of Selkirk.
