SCOTLAND are set to be approached to play in Australia in a World Cup send-off game for the Socceroos at the end of the season.
The Aussies have drawn a nightmare group in Brazil and will face world and European champions Spain, as well as Holland and Chile. They are desperate to play a European team who haven’t qualified for the finals in their last preparation match on 28 May at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium before they head off to South America.
Reports in the Australian media suggest Scotland are the No 1 target because they would guarantee a full house of 80,000 fans due to the large number of Scottish expats Down Under.
Scotland are the preferred opponents, ahead of Sweden, Denmark and Turkey.
Scotland last played in Australia in a World Cup play-off in 1985. Alex Ferguson’s side drew 0-0 in Melbourne in the second leg and qualified for the finals in Mexico the following year after having won 2-0 at Hampden.
