CHARLES Green has threatened to quit Rangers and has offered Wales training facilities ahead of their World Cup qualifier with Scotland; Kenny Shiels has denied claims he lied over interest in Cammy Bell and Hearts winger Andy Driver is set to join Houston Dynamo.
Overthrow Malcolm Murray or I’m leaving, says Charles Green
Rangers chief Charles Green has dropped a bombshell by demanding that club chairman Malcolm Murray be overthrown - or he’ll walk away from the club. It came to light earlier this month that the relationship between Green and Murray had broken down. THe pair were also ordered to patch things up or risk scaring away potential investors.
Green appointed Murray during the summer, largely to help him win over the Rangers support, but has reportedly been at loggerheads with the lifelong Rangers fan for some time now. Murray’s appearance on television last week to discuss the 12-month anniversary of the club entering administration allegedly angered Green, with sources claiming there is little chance of the relationship being rescued. Charles Green has also taken the unusual step of repeating his offer of training facilities to visiting teams by offering Wales the use of Murray Park when they face Scotland at Hampden in March. Green granted Italian giants Juventus the use of the Ibrox club’s facilities when they played Celtic in Glasgow last week. (various)
Kenny Shiels denies McCarthy’s ‘liar’ claims
Kilmarnock manager Kenny Shiels has hit back at claims from Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy by insisting that he is not a liar. The former Wolves and Ireland manager launched a blistering attack on the Kilmarnock boss over claims that Ipswich were tracking Rugby Park ‘keeper Cammy Bell, which McCarthy claims were untrue.
Shiels explained that he had been told by an agent of Ipswich’s interest, but Portman Road boss McCarthy claimed: “I’ve not spoken to [Kenny] and if someone from this club has spoken to him they’ve done it without me saying so. If that’s the case I’m going to be pretty cheesed.”
Bell has been linked with Rangers in previous weeks. (Scotsman)
Andy Driver set for Dynamo move
Hearts winger Andy Driver is set to sign for Houston Dynamo later today. A deal has been agreed between the clubs, which will see Hearts off-load one of their highest earners. Driver will undergo a medical in Texas before formally joining the club, and could make his debut in the next couple of weeks.
Driver’s wages at Hearts reportedly amounted to around £10,000-a-week, and his contract in June. (Evening News)
Dundee United take Swedish stopper Marcus Tornstrand on trial
Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara is looking to address the Tannadice club’s problem with conceding goals, bringing in former Sweden Under-21 stopper Marcus Tornstrand on trial. McNamara has admitted that, following the injury to Gavin Gunning, he needs to do something to shore up his leaky defence, and is running the rule over the 23-year-old ex-Hammarby defender. (various)
Allan McGregor faces Besiktas snub
Scotland international goalkeeper Allan McGregor faces being dropped by current club Besiktas - after being booed by the Turkish club’s own fans. McGregor’s form has been questionable, with the club having conceded 29 goals in 20 games, including a late goal against Gaziantespor this past weekend, giving the minnows a 1-1 draw with Besiktas. Substitute keeper Cenk Gonen was warmly welcomed when he began warming up, leading to hints that McGregor could find himself on the bench for Besiktas’ next match against Sivasspor. (Daily Record)
