HIBERNIAN have opened talks with Terry Butcher over the managerial vacancy at Easter Road and remain confident they can persuade him to take the job.

it is understood the initial talks between the Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager and Hibs chairman Rod Petrie yesterday were positive, although no agreement has been reached yet.

Hibs received permission from Inverness chairman Kenny Cameron on Tuesday to speak to Butcher, although the Highland club are still hopeful they can hold on to the former Rangers and England captain.

But Butcher, who last season turned down the offer of a move to English Championship club Barnsley after holding talks with them, is believed to be keen on taking the reins at Hibs. Negotiations on his potential appointment also include his assistant Maurice Malpas and chief scout Steve Marsella.

If Hibs agree a deal with Butcher, they will then have to settle on a compensation package with Inverness. Jimmy Nicholl, in caretaker charge at Hibs since Pat Fenlon’s resignation last Friday, has been told he will be taking the team this Saturday when Inverness are, coincidentally, the visitors to Easter Road.

Butcher is poised to become Hibs’ sixth manager in the last seven years and the club’s last trophy-winning boss, John Collins, has called on the Easter Road board to give the 54-year-old complete control of football affairs if he takes the job.

“If he’s left to get on with the job and do it the way he sees fit, then I’m sure he’ll do well,” said Collins. “It’s a big job of course, but when I was at Hibs, there was a little bit of interference from above.

“He’s done an outstanding job at Inverness, there’s no doubt about that. Hibs have a terrific infrastructure in place now, with the stadium and the training ground, so what they need now is a team that entertains on the park.”
