Merciless Montrose moved into third place with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Berwick Rangers at Shielfield.
The hosts had made an ideal start, opening the scoring in the ninth minute when Darren Lavery converted Damian Gielty’s measured cross. However, two minutes later, Montrose equalised when Alan Campbell’s flick on was powered home by Leighton McIntosh.
The visitors then took the lead in the 22nd minute as Lloyd Young fed Jamie Winter and the former Aberdeen midfielder drove the ball past Ian McCaldon in the Berwick goal.
Shortly before half-time, Berwick’s Lee Currie was denied a leveller by a splendid Sandy Wood save and the Montrose goalkeeper was again on hand to parry Dean Hoskins’ shot in the 77th minute.
Berwick were soon made to pay for their missed chances as Scott Johnston headed home the visitors’ third from a Paul Watson free-kick in the 80th minute.
Four minutes later, Lloyd Young drilled home a fourth to give Montrose a flattering winning margin.
