ABERDEEN manager Derek McInnes has told his players they can boost their international prospects by securing glory for the Dons.

Former Scotland Under-21 internationals Mark Reynolds and Peter Pawlett were tipped by some for full honours following impressive displays for the Dons this season, but both were left out of Gordon Strachan’s squad to face Poland next month.

Former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Willo Flood was also overlooked for his country despite reports claiming he was in Martin O’Neill’s thoughts.

But McInnes feels some of his players can make the step up, especially if they help the Dons fulfil their promise this season.

“There can only be so many in a squad,” said McInnes, whose side are chasing a cup double and sit second in the Scottish Premiership.

“Gordon’s been pleased with what he has had from the players in the last wee while so I can see why he’d be reluctant to make too many changes.

“From our point of view, it’s pleasing to even be asked the question about it.

“Certainly a few players came into consideration, I would have thought, and I don’t think that would have been the case at the start of the season. At least we are talking about it.

“If the players you are talking about can be part of a successful Aberdeen team, that can maybe help their cause.

“We have got good players here, players that I think could play international football, but sometimes you have got to wait for that opportunity and just make sure the consistency of performance keeps coming.”

McInnes confirmed that midfield pair Barry Robson and Jonny Hayes had both returned to training ahead of Saturday’s game against Partick Thistle at Firhill after injury forced them out of last weekend’s win at St Mirren Park.
