Steven Gerrard has warned the Ibrox board that his squad needs strengthened further if Rangers are to mount a serious challenge to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Gerrard has had a busy summer in the transfer market. He paid Genk £3.15 million to turn Ianis Hagi’s loan deal into a permanent move and has also brought in goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin from Sunderland and defender Calvin Bassey from Leicester City. On Friday he added centre-back Leon Balogun following his release by Wigan.

But the Rangers manager made it clear that this is not enough.

“We need more,” Gerrard said after the 2-0 home win over Coventry City in a pre-season friendly. “I have told the club that, I’ve been honest and open with what I feel we need.

“In terms of where we are at from a financial point of view, they are questions for other people, but I have made it quite clear that we need to add to what we’ve got. We need to add players into the 11 to make us stronger and then, naturally, that will make the squad stronger.

“At the moment, we still need to get people in the door.”

Gerrard stressed he was committed to Rangers, playing down reports of interest from Bristol City.

“I am content here, I’m happy,” he said. “My people haven’t heard anything from Bristol City, so I think it’s just paper talk and rumours.”
