English Premier League: Swansea step closer to survival

GYLFI Sigurdsson continued his impressive recent goalscoring form with a brace as Swansea took another big step towards Barclays Premier League survival with a 3-0 victory at Fulham.

The on-loan Hoffenheim midfielder took his tally to five goals in the last six games as the Swans secured their third successive league victory to provisionally climb up to eighth spot in the table. The promoted Welshmen edged the opening period thanks to Sigurdsson’s 36th-minute header. Sigurdsson then doubled his side’s advantage in the 66th minute before Joe Allen made sure of the points with a third 13 minutes from time.

Wigan missed the chance to climb out of the relegation zone after they were held 1-1 at home by West Brom. Scotland midfielder James McArthur put Wigan ahead in the 54th minute when he turned in Victor Moses’ cross. However, that lead lasted just 11 minutes before West Brom drew level through Wigan old boy Paul Scharner’s header.
