NEWCASTLE United have emerged as strong favourites to sign highly-rated Celtic stopper Virgil van Dijk.
Alan Pardew is believed to be an admirer of the £8m-rated 23-year-old, who impressed at the heart of Celtic’s defence last season.
The Magpies are reportedly weighing up a deadline-day bid.
Signed from Groningen in June 2013 for £2.5 million, van Dijk has attracted interest from Swansea, Southampton, Tottenham and Hamburg.
Celtic’s chances of keeping the Dutchman have been bolstered however following last night’s 1 - 1 draw against Maribor which puts Ronny Deila’s side in a strong position for the return leg at Celtic Park.
With the Parkhead side on the verge of the group stages of the Champions League, Celtic may have a better chance of convincing van Dijk to remain.
