The SPFL have moved the final day of the Ladbrokes Championship season back one day - so that Rangers’ trip to St Mirren can be televised live on BT Sport.
The match was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday 30 April with a 3pm kick-off. SPFL protocol dictates that all final day fixtures kick-off at the same time in order to ensure fair competition.
Therefore, BT Sport’s request means all final day fixtures must be moved to correspond with the new kick-off time, which is Sunday 1 May at 12.30pm, as 3pm Saturday kick-offs cannot be shown live by TV companies.
Ironically, St Mirren v Rangers could be the only game that day which won’t have an impact on the final league table, as Rangers will surely have the title wrapped up long before then, while St Mirren are expected to sit comfortably between the relegation places and the play-offs.
This move is sure to further alienate fans who believe the Scottish game does too much to pander to the desires of Sky and BT Sport.
The fixture was already the source of controversy for St Mirren fans after the club announced that it was increasing the away ticket allocation and moving home fans in order to do so.
