SOUTHAMPTON have reportedly rekindled their interest in Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.
According to the Daily Mail, scouts from St Mary’s travelled to Glasgow to watch Celtic take on Inter Milan last Thursday in the Europa League with a view to watching the 23-year-old.
Southampton are keen on bolstering their backline, and look likely to miss out on the permanent signing of on-loan Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, who is on Manchester City’s radar.
Saints boss Ronald Koeman is keen on keeping the Belgian defender but accepts Southampton could struggle to compete with City on a financial level.
Southampton are not alone in their van Dijk interest.
Sunderland and Everton both made tentative enquiries in January but were put off by the £10 million price tag quoted by Celtic.
Arsenal also registered an interest before signing Gabriel Paulista from Spanish side Villarreal.
