Falkirk 0-1 Ross County: Victory secures County's First Division safety
Flynn 90
Falkirk approached this game still dreaming of last-day drama but, in the end, it was Ross County who avoided a nightmare finale to the season as victory secured their First Division safety. Jonathan Flynn's injury-time header gave the Staggies the win that, given their three-point lead over Cowdenbeath and a goal difference that is 21 better off, means they avoid the relegation play-off spot.
For County manager Jimmy Calderwood, avoiding a last-day decider with pal Jimmy Nicholl's Blue Brazil side was a massive relief. He said: "It was going to be our worst nightmare. We've had so many good times together, but it's dog eat dog in this game. The worst-case scenario was the last game. I had it against Falkirk (with Kilmarnock) last year but it would have been ten-times worse against my good mate."
The Bairns were still clinging to a near-miraculous scenario at kick-off as they desperately hoped to face Dunfermline on Saturday with something still to play for. Instead, they will have to endure their bitter rivals lifting silverware and celebrating the promotion to the SPL they so craved themselves.
Manager Steven Pressley has been charged with trying again next season, however, after the board ended speculation over his future by announcing a new 12-month deal for the former Scotland defender.
Pressley said: "I'm very pleased to get my contract sorted out. We started putting the building blocks in place this season but I know there will be severe financial constraints next season."
