The 26-year-old back-row, who has 18 caps for his country, was signed on a short-term deal last autumn, but has done enough to merit a contract extension.

Leonardi, who has started five times in seven appearances for Edinburgh since his arrival last October, said: “I’ve worked really hard in my time here and I’m really happy to re-sign for the rest of this season and one more.”

Brought through the ranks at the San Isidero Club in Buenos Aires, Leonardi began his professional career in 2010 for Argentina’s high performance squad, the Pampas XV, before going on to establish himself in the national side.

“This is great news for me. In these three months I’ve done my absolute best to perform for the club and make a good impression,” he added.

He joined Edinburgh from the Kings franchise, whom he played with for the 2013 southern-hemisphere season, and said he was ‘really impressed’ with the facilities in the capital.

Edinburgh head coach Alan Solomons said the back-row had ‘done well in the short time’ he had been at the club, adding: “Tomas is a physical, abrasive and hard-working player and his training and performances have justified this extension.

“He’s comfortable across the whole back-row and this versatility is extremely valuable to the squad.”

Edinburgh’s next match is in the RaboDirect PRO12 on Sunday February 9th, away to Newport Gwent Dragons.
