Everett iron-play forges title victory
CRAIG Everett used his driver only three times in winning the Scottish Golfers' Alliance championship with a three-under-par total of 208 over the Moray Golf Club's Old and New Courses.
The Caldwell pro, who also won the title at Scotscraig in 2002, led from start to finish, clinching The Scotsman Trophy and the 1,000 first prize with a steady closing round of 70 over the par-71 Old Course.
"You can lose a lot of balls in the whins at Lossiemouth, so I used a three-iron off the tee to keep the ball on the fairway. And it paid off. I used my driver only three times over the 54 holes," said Everett.
Starting the last round one shot ahead of Alastair Webster, Everett shook off the Edzell pro's potential challenge by reaching the turn in two-under-par 33 to 38 by Webster.
Webster came back with four birdies in a row from the 14th, but a level-par 71 left him two strokes short of catching the steady Everett.
Meanwhile, Scotland's female golfers have a top-10 finish in their sights heading into the closing day of the World Amateur Team championship in Adelaide. Fiona Norris' side posted a third round level-par 146 for an 11-over team total of 447 and share 12th place behind Sweden, who finished 11 shots clear of the field with a 14-under 422.
