Egelstaff left to fly flag after securing quarter-final berth
SUSAN Egelstaff was left to carry home hopes in the singles after she reached the quarter-finals with a battling 17-21, 21-18, 21-15 win over New Zealand's Michelle Chan Ky at the Bank of Scotland International Championships at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall.
In the men's singles, the seeded Kieran Merrilees beat fellow-Scot Martin Campbell to reach the last 16 but failed to convert a match point in the second game and went down 21-17, 20-22, 18-21 to India's Sourabh Verma.
Kirsty Gilmour showed her potential with a crushing 21-6, 21-17 win over Canada's Audrey Boneville in the second round and the 16-year-old was far from disgraced in going out 11-21, 13-21 to sixth seed Anu Nieminen.
"It's a relief to get through," said Egelstaff, who shrugged off the injury fears signalled by heavy taping on her right leg. "It's sore, but there's no problem."
