Edinburgh clinch battle of the universities

A fourth-consecutive clean sheet kept Edinburgh at the top of the Premier Division but in the first half-hour it was Watt who created the chances.

Mark Tait somehow managed to scoop Michael Connor's shot over the bar for a corner from which Andy Forbes headed just over. Then a superb run and cross by Forbes led to a penalty when Ricky Burke was tripped, but Tait dived to his left to make a fine save from Connor's kick.

Ten minutes from half-time a determined run on the right by Colin Cameron brought a free kick near the corner flag. When the ball was played away from the near post area, Gordon Milne was on hand to score with a shot which was deflected past John Falconer.

In the last minute, Watt almost got an equaliser when Stuart McIntyre glanced a header across goal from a corner.

Heriot Watt: Falconer, Forbes, Wilson (J Rae 60), Duff, C Rae, Irvine, Donnelly (McIntyre 75), Travis, Napier, Connor, Burke. Subs: Main, Wells, MacKenzie.
