Edinburgh City slickers fire six past Spartans in superb League Cup victory
SPARTANS under-19s were hit for six in their East of Scotland League Cup clash against Edinburgh City on the new FieldTurf pitch at Ainslie Park.
The home team opened the scoring in the second minute when Gavin Cattanach set up Scott McDonald to score.
City's Daniel Denholm was awarded a penalty when he was brought down by Keir Anderson and Shaun Harrison scored from the spot to level the game at 1-1.
Peter Stenhouse created City's second goal of the game, squaring for Denholm to put the ball into an empty net.
City extended their lead on the hour mark when Ross Guthrie beat the offside trap before sticking the ball past Ewan Smart to extend the visitors' lead to 3-1.
Spartans then reduced the deficit with a goal from Steven Philp. Denholm then crossed for McFarland to beat Smart and put City two goals in front.
Stenhouse scored another goal to increase the margin to 5-2 before Paul Cameron headed home a third goal for Spartans.
Deep into injury time, City's Lloyd Duncan pounced on a loose ball to make the final score 6-3 for Edinburgh City.
