Edinburgh City enter race for coveted SFL slot

EDINBURGH City today announced that they are one of the clubs hoping to take Gretna's place in the Scottish Football League.

The East of Scotland League club has lodged an application with the SFL to join the Third Division following Gretna's resignation last week.

Fellow Edinburgh side Spartans and East Lothian outfit Preston Athletic have also registered their interest in replacing the Raydale Park outfit, along with Huntly, Annan Athletic and Cove Rangers.

City are based at Meadowbank Stadium and have grown into one of the largest community-based football organisations in Scotland, fielding more than 30 teams each week. Club Chairman Andy McDonald confirmed: "We are excited by the opportunity to take Edinburgh City to the Scottish Football League.

"We believe that the combination of a well-established development structure and the facilities at Meadowbank offer a very strong base to build on if we are successful in our application."
