Dundee 0-1 Airdrie United

Dundee 0 Airdrie United 1 Lynch 20

AIRDRIE continued their impressive recent form with a well-deserved victory over Dundee.

While this does not instantly improve their league position – they remain in the play-off spot – they have the all-important momentum going into the final weeks of the season.

Simon Lynch's first-half goal was enough to gain them three points and, in the process, suck Dunfermline into the mire at the bottom end.

Airdrie's need for points was shown in their early play, as they scuttled around their opponents like dervishes.

It took them 20 minutes to open the scoring, taking advantage of some hesitant defending by Dundee. Paul Di Giacomo was allowed to break free inside the area but his initial shot was saved well by Rab Douglas.

The veteran goalkeeper could do nothing for the rebound, however, as his defenders stopped, allowing Lynch to poke a low shot into the net.

Dundee's best chance to equalise came from a corner kick on 35 minutes but, despite Mark Gilhaney playing a dangerous ball into the six-yard area, the chance was lost because defender Gary MacKenzie upended Lee Hollis, the Airdrie goalkeeper, prompting play to be halted for a foul.

Dundee came tantalisingly close to levelling the scoreline on 67 minutes when Hollis could only parry a Mickael Antoine-Curier drive into the path of Colin McMenamin, but defender William McLachlan made a miraculous clearance.
