Denmark 0 - 1 Wales: Toshack hails captain Bellamy after glorious winner

WALES manager John Toshack was delighted with his side's all-round game after they beat Denmark 1-0 in Copenhagen.

Craig Bellamy scored the winner in the 77th minute, having had a chance to break the deadlock in the first half. But he made dramatic amends with 13 minutes remaining, picking the ball up 40 yards out, beating one tackler and firing past Thomas Sorensen from 20 yards.

"We had some anxious moments late on, but overall you can't fault the way the players worked," said Toshack.

"I thought we had four or five really good chances, two terrific saves from Boaz Myhill, so it was pleasing all round.

"We have come here without important players who would normally be first choices, and it was really pleasing to see how the team worked."

Bellamy was deployed just behind fellow forward Ched Evans and the manager praised the West Ham striker's performance.

"Craig played deeper but still got in and got his chances in the first half and then got his goal," he said. It was Bellamy's 16th goal for his country and took his tally ahead of the legendary John Charles, and the Wales skipper is now equal fifth top scorer in his country's history alongside Mark Hughes and Cliff Jones.

Bellamy, the oldest Welshman on the pitch,

felt his side were full value for their win. "I thought in the first half we were very good. Denmark are a good side and we created four or five good chances," he said.
