Defence worries hamper Alloa's tilt at the top

The outright lead at the top of the Second Division table is up for grabs at Recreation Park tonight when Alloa host Cowdenbeath, with Allan Maitland's side having the opportunity to reach the summit for the first time in five months.

Midfielder Mark Brown looks set to step back into the centre of the home side's defence with Chris Townsley definitely ruled out with a hamstring problem. Scott Buist is struggling with a knock with wingers Mark Gilhaney and Dougie Wilson also out through injury.

Maitland said: "A win against Cowdenbeath would give us four points from two games against teams that are also looking for promotion and that is a good return in my book."

Cowdenbeath are having a mini slump at the moment with 2010 bringing a draw and two defeats for Danny Lennon's men. Their cause tonight is hindered with central defender Joe Mbu and midfielder Scott McBride expected to miss out due to injury while the experienced Craig Winter is rated as a doubt to start.

Lennon is not getting concerned at this stage about the lack of wins. He said: "Alloa will give us a tough game but I am sure we will be back to wining ways soon."

In the Third Division, Albion Rovers have won twice against visitors Livingston at Cliftonhill this season, but injuries and suspension are hindering their chances of making it three.

Winger Chris Boyle is a doubt with a knock and striker Marc McCusker looks set to be ruled out after suffering mild concussion at Elgin at the weekend. Rovers defenders Alan Reid and Phil McGrath both still have a virus.

For Livingston, on-loan Hearts right-back Jonny Brown is a doubt with manager Gary Bollan going with the same squad that drew 2-2 at Station Park.

Annan welcome their first home match in over nine weeks when Berwick Rangers come calling. Player-assistant manager Derek Townsley is a doubt.

Berwick will again be without the services of Robbie Horn and Alan Brazil with Steve Notman also struggling.
