Death of Triple Crown hero Borthwick
DR JOHN "Jake" Borthwick, one of the heroes of Scotland's 1938 Triple Crown triumph died peacefully in Galashiels on Tuesday at the age of 97.
Borthwick played for Stewart's Melville FP and captained them to the club championship in 1937/38. That season he was selected by Scotland and played against Wales and Ireland at Murrayfield. He was known as a hard-working forward who was an expert in the lost art of dribbling. Borthwick was selected for the final match at Twickenham but injury forced him out of what became known as "Wilson Shaw's Game" as Scotland sealed their eighth Triple Crown – something which has only been achieved twice since, in 1984 and 1990.
Dr Borthwick worked as a consultant physician at Peel Hospital from 1950 to 1976.
His funeral will be held at Old Parish and St Paul's Church in Galashiels on Tuesday at 1pm with a cremation service at Mortonhall at 3pm.
