Davis Cup tie is on its way to Liverpool
LIVERPOOL will stage a Davis Cup tie for the first time in September when Great Britain take on Poland in a Euro/Africa Group I relegation clash.
The Echo Arena will host John Lloyd's side on a hard court with the venue able to hold up to 5,000 for the tie each day between 18 and 20 September.
Lloyd said: "Liverpool is a fantastic city with a rich sporting pedigree and I'm very excited to be taking the tie to the north-west.
"I am delighted that the city is so keen to host what will be a difficult tie for us and we will need the support of a vocal crowd if we are going to maintain our place in Group 1 in 2010."
Councillor Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool City Council, said: "To stage this crucial Davis Cup tie is a huge coup for Liverpool and underlines the city's reputation as a natural home for world-class events.
"I'm sure this fantastic occasion will be a smash hit."
Britain must beat Poland to avoid dropping into Group II of the Euro/Africa zone, having been beaten 4-1 by Ukraine in Glasgow in March.
