David Beckham gets go-ahead to start training with Spurs
David Beckham will train with Tottenham's first-team squad today after completing a medical examination at the club's training ground yesterday.
Beckham also underwent several fitness tests at the training complex in Essex. The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder will begin a four-week training schedule as he looks to maintain his fitness during the MLS close season and prove to Fabio Capello that he deserves an England recall.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp claimed at the weekend that a proposed loan deal which would have allowed Becckham to play for the club looked like a "no-goer", but appeared to go back on that statement by saying it "could still happen" after watching his side beat Charlton 3-0 to earn an FA Cup fourth round tie at Fulham. It is believed Spurs are unwilling to pay the percentage of Beckham's wages the Galaxy are demanding, but both parties could still come to an agreement for the 35-year-old, who last turned out for an English club in Manchester United's final match of the 2002-03 season.
Beckham, who has enjoyed two loan spells with AC Milan while a Galaxy player, smiled and waved to the cameras as they caught glimpses of the former Real Madrid midfielder during his six-hour stay at the Chigwell complex, which was broken up by an hour's worth of tests at a local hospital.
Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has begun a training stint with the Emirates club in order to keep fit during the Major League Soccer off-season.
French international striker Henry, who plays for the New York Red Bulls in MLS, is still very much a hero at Arsenal, for whom he scored 226 goals between 1999 and 2007.
