Cycling: Silver for Skinner as Germans come good

Capital cyclist Callum Skinner enjoyed his first podium finish in a major competition after he anchored the Great Britain squad to silver medals in the Under-23 team sprint on the second day of racing at the European Junior Track Championships in Anadia, Portugal, last night.

The City of Edinburgh rider, 18, a former pupil at James Gillespie's High School, linked up with Pete Mitchell and Philip Hindes to record the second-quickest time in qualifying when they stopped the clock at 44.977 seconds. Only the Germans went faster with 44.868sec to set up a gold medal showdown.

Hindes, who is German-born but has a British father, Mitchell and Skinner raised their game in the second ride, improving to 44.930, but the Germans recorded 44.477 to clinch the gold.

Britain ended the day with gold in the women's under-23 team sprint, the women's under- 23 individual pursuit, and the junior men's pursuit, plus four silvers.
