Cycling: Martin tries to put spoke into Croall's title hopes
David MARTIN (Bicycleworks) kept alive his outside hopes of lifting the DHL Meadowbank National Track League title with a fruitful outing in last night's 15th round of the 20-week competition.
Martin lost out to league leader Bruce Croall (City of Edinburgh) in the opening event on the programme, the 15-lap scratch, but bounced back with wins in the 20-lap points race, and the elimination event.
He boosted his tally in the final race, the 35-lap scratch, but had to settle for second spot when Croall - who was also runner- up to Peter Cullen (Stirling BC) in the sprint handicap - turned up the power around the final lap to post an impressive win in a fast-paced contest.
The race was brought to life by a mid-race surge from Commonwealth Games rider Davie Lines (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team), who was having his first league outing of the season and bagged two of the intermediate sprint bonuses, with Derek Timmins (Musselburgh RCC) taking the other.
Emma Baird (City of Edinburgh) and Julie Dominguez (West Lothian Clarion) shared the honours in the women's events.
