Cycling: Injuries rule Hoy out for World title

SIR CHRIS HOY will miss the World Track Cycling Championships in Pruszkow, Poland, later this month after failing to recover from the injuries that have hampered him over the last two weeks.

Hoy suffered multiple cuts and bruises when he came to grief while contesting the Keirin final at the UCI World Cup in Copenhagen just over a fortnight ago.

He has made every effort to get into shape which includes on-going medical treatment and a change to his planned training programme for the final stage of the build up to the championships.

However, he was yesterday advised by medical staff to take time off in order to recover fully.

Hoy accepts that following the British Cycling team doctor's advice is the best way to ensure he can regain full fitness in time to begin his challenge for a place at the London Olympics in 2012 and said: "I'm hugely disappointed that I'm not going to be riding in the Worlds. I've been really lucky in my career so far and this is the first time I've had to miss a major championship event due to injury."
