Cycling: Hoy clicks into top gear in Copenhagen

SIR CHRIS HOY impressed at the UCI World Cup in Copenhagen last night to bag what he hopes will be the first of three gold medals from his weekend's efforts, writes COLIN RENTON.

The 32-year-old Capital ace rejoined forces with Jason Kenny and Jamie Staff – his colleagues in last summer's Olympic triumph – to chalk up an impressive win in the team sprint.

Racing in the colours of their trade team, Sky+ HD, the Brits clocked the fastest time in qualifying to set up a gold medal decider against their perennial rivals France, who were racing as Team Cofidis. And it was Hoy and co who produced the goods in the final, blazing around the Ballerup Velodrome to secure the win that takes his career World Cup gold medal tally to 27.

That success was one of three British victories, with Victoria Pendleton notching top spot in the women's sprint and Lizzie Armitstead claiming top spot on the podium in the women's scratch race.

Hoy was due to return to action today for the early rounds of the Keirin, which will reach its climax tonight, and he will also contest the individual sprint tomorrow.
