Cycling: Bradley Wiggins in frame for Giro d'Italia victory
Bradley Wiggins will start today's Giro d'Italia as a genuine general classification contender for the first time and will be among the favourites for the opening 8.4 kilometre time-trial in Amsterdam.
Victory today would see Wiggins become the second Briton to claim the Giro's pink jersey, the maglia rosa, behind Mark Cavendish, who is absent this year as he competes in the Tour of California.
Wiggins is expected to race hard – at Tour pace – for the first two weeks of the 21-stage race and ease off until the May 30 finish in Verona to accumulate miles without becoming over-fatigued.
Londoner Wiggins, who equalled the best British result in Tour de France history last year with fourth overall, will again use the Giro as a dress rehearsal for the Tour.
