Capital cyclist Claire Thomas won impressively at the Wodeq road race in Belgium when she broke away in the closing stages of the 94 kilometres event to chalk up her first success of the season, writes COLIN RENTON.

The 40-year-old former Edinburgh RC rider who is based in Belgium with the St Martinus-Kerksken team, broke away with Lensy Debboudt (Keukens Redant) and the pair built up a substantial lead before Thomas attacked on the final climb and came home 32 seconds clear of her rival, with the rest of the field almost eight minutes down.

Thomas is expected to return home next month to contest the British Road Race Championships which will be taking place in Glasgow.
