CYCLING: Olympic champion Joanna Rowsell has confirmed she suffered a broken collarbone during the Prudential RideLondon weekend. The 24-year-old Wiggle-Honda rider, who won London 2012 team pursuit gold alongside Laura Trott and Dani King, crashed towards the end of the Grand Prix criterium race around St James’ Park.

Writing on her website, www.joannarowsell.com, she said: “I went over the handle bars and landed heavily on my head and my left shoulder. I was taken to St Thomas’ hospital where they confirmed
I had broken my left clavicle and would require surgery.

“I was kept in overnight for observation before returning home. I have an appointment with a specialist in Manchester and I’m due to have the operation on Thursday.”
