SIR Bradley Wiggins warmed up for next month’s Giro d’Italia with a fifth-placed finish in the Giro del Trentino as Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali triumphed.
Nibali could be the Londoner’s main rival for the maglia rosa in May.
Team Sky’s Wiggins suffered mechanical misfortune at the foot of the day’s final climb at the end of the 167-kilometre route and Nibali (Astana) won the stage and the overall title.
The chase and a subsequent Nibali acceleration just as Wiggins was closing in meant the Briton was cast adrift as the Italian won the stage. Wiggins was ninth, finishing 1min 40secs behind overall.
