Cycling: Stewart bags Grand double
CITY OF EDINBURGH cyclist Kevin Stewart posted his second major win in less than a week when he bagged top spot in the junior sprint at the German Grand Prix in Cottbus, writes COLIN RENTON.
The 17-year-old Dundonian eased through the early rounds before seeing off Karel Matejka of the Czech Republic in the final.
The victory came just days after he had taken the honours in the Sparkassen Cup on the same track.
Meanwhile, West Lothian youngster Ross Creber had his first success in the colours of Endura Racing Team when he won the David Bell Memorial Road Race in Ayrshire.
The 20-year-old from South Queensferry showed he is in good shape for this weekend's British Under-23 Championships when he outsprinted teammate Evan Oliphant and English rider James Sampson (Candi tv) at the end of the gruelling 70-mile event.
Elsewhere, travelling took its toll on Jessica Wilson-Young (Edinburgh RC) when she suffered a rare domestic defeat in yesterday's Scottish 25-mile time trial championships in Aberdeen.
Wilson-Young, who had finished sixth in the British 50-mile event in Lancashire on Saturday, was beaten into second place by Mari Todd (Sandy Wallace Cycles).
