Cycling: Oliphant and Thomas shine
CAPITAL cyclists Evan Oliphant and Claire Thomas took a host of big name scalps as they acquitted themselves well at the British Road Race Championships in Wales, writes COLIN RENTON.
Oliphant, riding in the colours of Endura Racing Team finished in seventh place after being edged out by Tour de France star Mark Cavendish in the final sprint. The race, which featured several ProTour riders, produced a surprise win for Kristian House (Rapha Condor).
Thomas was equally impressive in the women's race, taking 11th place behind some big names, with the majority of those ahead of her being full-time riders, including winner Nicole Cooke.
Meanwhile, Oliphant's team-mate Kevin Barclay retained the Scottish Criterium title at Erskine yesterday.
