Cycling: Ayre beats clubmate Haynes to sprint title in Scunthorpe

City of Edinburgh cyclist Kenny Ayre is poised to lift his first major title after winning the Scunthorpe Trophy
Meeting, the latest round of the British Sprinters’ League.

Ayre qualified as top seed in the Jack Tighe Sprint competition with a time of 11.27 seconds, with his clubmate Matt Haynes continuing his comeback to racing by taking the number two position in 11.44 seconds.

The knockout stages of the eight-man event went according to the seeding, leaving the Capital club colleagues in the showdown for the silverware. Ayre, in only his third season of racing, took the honours by a tyre’s width in the final.

He will have a chance to celebrate overall success on home soil with the two remaining rounds scheduled for Meadowbank on Saturday and Dundee on Sunday.

Another relative newcomer, Phil Trodden, also continued his progress when he took second place in the 20 kilometre scratch event and third spot in the six kilometre points race.

Trodden came to competitive cycling after a taster session at Meadowbank Velodrome and, after some tweaking of his racing style, he has been able to transform his natural strength into good results on both sides of the Border.
