Curling: City schoolgirl makes Team GB for Poland
WEST FENTON curler Rebecca Kesley is amongst 18 Scottish athletes selected by the British Olympic Association to represent Team GB at the ninth European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOWF) in Slask Beskidy, Poland between February 14-21, writes ROB EYTON-JONES.
The event will see more than 1070 athletes from 45 European countries assemble to compete in nine different winter disciplines. The 32-strong British team will compete in five disciplines: alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating and snowboarding.
Sixteen-year-old Kesley is in top form having been part of 'Team Fleming' which narrowly lost out to World Junior Champions 'Muirhead' in the finals of the Scottish Junior Championships.
As a consolation Fleming had beaten Muirhead earlier in the week during the round robin stage of the event.
"Our aim was to get to the final and it was good to beat Muirhead earlier in the week," said Mary Erskine School pupil Rebecca.
"We got to the EYOWF on Friday and I'm very excited about it. Of the five of us in the squad three are in my usual team.
"We all know each other really well, we played together in an event back in January."
The entire British team of curlers is made up of Scots (Edinburgh's Colin Dick is in the Boys' team), which will be led by Olympic gold medallist Rhona Martin.
