Curling: City curlers just miss out

CAPITAL curler Colin Campbell was a whisker away from one of the best wins of his career in the Edinburgh International final at Murrayfield Ice Rink.

Campbell and his team-mates Richard Woods, Logan Gray and Perth skip Pete Loudon led Lockerbie's double world champion David Murdoch by a single stone with just one end left to play.

But Murdoch then showed why he is the man to beat at next month's European Championships in Aberdeen and February's Winter Olympics in Vancouver by counting a double at the last to squeeze home 7-6.

Campbell's side had used home advantage to lead 3-0 after three ends and, even though Murdoch scored a triple at the sixth to edge ahead 5-4, Loudon picked up two stones at the next to stand on the brink of victory.

Campbell and company won seven matches en route to the final, topping Group D before beating 2008 winner Andy Kapp of Germany 7-3 in the quarters.
