Cricket: Scots squads for UAE and Sri Lankan tour named

SCOTTISH cricket selectors yesterday confirmed the squads travelling to the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka over the next seven weeks.

The Intercontinental Cup squad will fly out from Glasgow tomorrow in preparation for their ICC Intercontinental Cup match against the UAE, which will take place from 16-19 February.

That will be Scotland’s third game in the 2011-2013 competition, following a rain-affected draw with Holland and a winning draw against Namibia.

Batsman Josh Davey, who is in South Africa with Middlesex as part of his rehabilitation from surgery late last year, and Kyle Coetzer, participating in the Bangladesh Premier League, drop out of that squad. Young batsmen Ewan Chalmers and Freddie Coleman, who have emerged through the Scottish age group system, have been drafted in and given the opportunity to push for a place in the national side.

After the Intercontinental Cup, the Scots will travel to Sri Lanka for an intensive training camp where they will play a combination of 50 and 20-over matches against quality Sri Lankan sides. Fraser Watts, Calvin Burnett, Jan Stander and Josh Davey will join the squad at that point in the tour.

The squad will then return to the UAE on March 5 for two vital games in the newly branded Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship. These matches against the UAE will take place on 7 and 9 March. The focus of the tour then switches to Twenty20 games with the ICC World T20 Qualifier being held from the 13 to 24 March.

Matthew Parker has been recuperating from hip surgery and will make a welcome return to the squad for the first time since sustaining the injury early last summer. He will travel to the UAE but will not play in the Intercontinental Cup game and instead prepare for the one day and T20 matches which follow.
