Cricket: Steindl’s joy as Scots stun Bangladesh

Coach Peter Steindl today hailed one of the most remarkable Scottish cricket victories of all time – a 34-run win over a Bangaldesh side ranked No.4 in the world in a twenty:20 international in The Hague, Holland, yesterday.

Greenock batsman Richie Berrington led the way with exactly 100 as Scotland reached 162-7 before bowling out Bangladesh for 128.

Steindl tweeted: “A good day for the Scotland team. Excellent performance. Important that we see it as the start of something. More hard work to come.”

Unfortunately Scotland’s chance to develop momentum has been hampered by the cancellation of next month’s scheduled one day match against England due to ground conditions at The Grange, Edinburgh, which has been flooded.

But nothing could take away from the euphoria with all-rounder Preston Mommsen tweeting: “First win over a full member nation! Feeling is a good one! Absolutely buzzing! Awesome team performance.”

Skipper Gordon Drummond chipped in: “Tremendous from the guys. Very proud of the efforts from everyone!”

Backing up Berrington was Calum MacLeod, who made 19 while Josh Davey and Majid Haq took three wickets apiece.

Mashrafe Mortaza took two for 22 and was easily the Tigers’ best bowler, with Abul Hasan coming in for some heavy punishment, conceding 32 runs from his three overs, which included three consecutive fours off Berrington in the 13th over.

Bangladesh, who recorded a 3-0 T20 series victory over Ireland earlier this month, lost wickets at regular intervals to undermine their chase.

Opener Tamim Iqbal made a breezy 25 off 19 balls at the top of the order and Shakib Al Hasan top scored with 31 but their hopes vanished when he was seventh man out and Scotland duly closed out a convincing win, with Bangladesh all out in the 18th over.

Scotland return to CB 40 action on Sunday at Glamorgan and the result will be seen as a boost for the under-19s who set off on Friday for their world cup in Australia.
