Cricket: Morton CC in final of Small Clubs Cup

Meadows-based Morton cricket club will play the biggest match in a 26-year history tomorrow when they face Aberdeen Bon Accord at Forfar in the final of the Scottish Small Clubs Cup.

The East Division Four outfit will be hoping to draw on form that has seen them gain promotions in each of the past two seasons with a squad that includes players from Scotland, England, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Pakistan, Canada and even a female Swedish archaeologist currently working in the Capital.

More recently Morton overcame Woodcutters when batsman Veera Naga smashed seven sixes, Tranent and Motherwell, all away, to clinch their place in the final and add lustre to a season that begin with a tour of Majorca.

Wicket-keeper Alan Cunningham, who previously owned the “Football Crazy” programme and memorabilia shop, said: “The Majorca tour followed previous visits to Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Gibraltar, Portugal, Malta and France but should have served as an omen for this rain-spoiled season.

“We figured in only the fifth washout in two decades of cricket in the Ballearic Islands but it was still good to get the lads away.”
