Cricket: Maj sure to be next Scot for English tilt

The English County Championship. Once the holy grail of all
aspiring Scottish cricketers. And it still retains much of its kudos and appeal. This summer, Scots Kyle Coetzer (Northants) and Preston Mommsen (Leicestershire) have both played first-team Championship matches, while Josh Davey (Middlesex), Ally Evans (Derbyshire), Calum Macleod (on trial at Northants), Freddie Coleman (Warwickshire) and Matthew Cross (Notts) have all featured in the 2012 Second XI County Championship.

Only yesterday it looked certain there was about to be another. Majid Haq’s consistently economical and wicket-taking off-spin has not gone unnoticed on the County circuit. Somerset, against whom Maj impressed for the Saltires at Taunton and will feature again in the final CB40 match on 19 August, made a move to sign him – only for negotiations to break down at the 11th hour when Pakistani slow left-armer Abdur Rehman belatedly obtained a
visa and was snapped up
instead.

Maj deserves his chance – whenever it will come.
