Cricket: Burns keeps the heat on for Carlton II

Ross Burns scored a half century as Carlton II kept up the pressure on East One leaders Glenrothes with a comfortable victory over Holy Cross on Saturday.

With the Fifers’ match at home to Grange II falling foul of the weather, Carlton II took advantage to post a 118-run win at Arboretum.

Batting first the visitors made 226-7, Burns’ 50 backed up by 42 by young Kyle Macpherson. Raja Javed took three wickets for the home side.

The reply for Holy Cross never really got going, good bowling from the Carlton II attack seeing them bowled out for 108. Mo Ahmed, Haris Aslam and Charles Legget all took three wickets.

Elsewhere in the top flight, Largo defeated Watsonians II at Myreside.

Edinburgh South kept up their challenge at the top end of East Two with a comfortable victory over Leith FAB.

Ben Wilcock was the star man for Edinburgh South, taking 3-13 to help bowl Leith FAB out for 149. He then backed those scalps up with 76 not out as his side won by seven wickets.

Westquarter & Redding stayed bottom after a six wicket loss to Freuchie II.
