Cricket: Big-hitting Henry Edwards in mood

Henry Edwards heads north with his Grange team-mates today for their clash with
Stoneywood-Dyce on the back
of a century for the Scotland Under-19s earlier this week.

In a few days’ time Edwards and the rest of the national age-grade squad jet off to the World Cup in Australia, but for now they are concentrating on leaving their club sides with a bang.

And Edwards could not be in
better form, having hit 123 runs off just 104 balls on Tuesday at Brandon CC in Durham as the under-19s saw off the Northern Universities Student Club by 101 runs in a 40-over match.

Grange head in to this afternoon’s clash at Peoples Park top of the table, but they have not played a league or Scottish Cup match since 9 June, when they defeated Arbroath.

Since then, league matches with Heriot’s and Carlton and Scottish Cup encounters with Renfrew, Fauldhouse and Udd-ingston have been lost to rain, and due to flooding at Portgower Place there has been little or no training done together.

Grange did manage to play a Twenty20 Masterton Trophy semi-final match with Carlton on Monday to get some overs under their belt ahead of the league run-in. Captain Neil McCallum said: “It was good to get the match in against Carlton, despite us losing, because in general the last few weeks have been so frustrating with the weather. We have generally done quite well up at Stoneywood.”

Stuart Davidson and Simon Taylor are both unavailable for Grange, while with Portgower Place to be out of action for a while the club look set to play some home matches within the grounds of Fettes College.

Second-placed Watsonians head to Forfarshire this afternoon in the middle of a busy weekend. Last night they were due to have played Carlton in the final of the Masterton Trophy and tomorrow a trip to
Renfrew is lined-up in the Scottish Cup last eight.

Heriot’s head to Carlton off the back of a thumping Scottish Cup win at Ferguslie seven days ago while Aberdeenshire welcome Arbroath to Mannofield. In April, Aberdeenshire won the corresponding fixture by 10 runs.
